How to Choose an Akkermansia Ingredient Supplier: A Buyer's Checklist

Last updated: 13 October 2026 · By Tianyi Health Tech

Quick answer

Choose an Akkermansia supplier by checking evidence, not claims: a deposited strain with an accession number, a stated potency unit and method (TFU/g or CFU), a marker-protein assay such as Amuc_1100, heavy-metal and microbiology limits, a COA for every batch, certificates held by the actual manufacturer, stability data and a regulatory dossier. If any item cannot be shown on paper, consider it unproven.

Why does supplier selection matter more for Akkermansia?

Akkermansia is a strain-specific, technically demanding ingredient. Two powders both labeled “Akkermansia muciniphila” can differ in strain, cell form, potency unit and the data behind them. Because published human data is limited and often relates to a particular strain, the supplier’s documentation is the main thing you can verify.

If you are new to the ingredient, start with what pasteurized Akkermansia is and how it differs from live.

What should be on your checklist?

Akkermansia supplier checklist: what to request and why
CheckWhat to requestWhy it matters
Strain identityStrain name and deposit accession number(s) from a recognised culture collectionLinks the powder to a defined, traceable strain
Species confirmationIdentification method, for example 16S rRNA identity against a reference strainConfirms the species on every batch
Cell formStatement of live or pasteurized (heat-inactivated)Drives storage, formats, claims and regulation
Potency unit and methodTotal cells (TFU/g) or CFU, the method and the specification range per gradeUnits are not interchangeable
Marker protein assayAmuc_1100 or other marker protein content and the assay methodA strain-linked quality marker beyond cell count
Culturable countCFU/g limit for a pasteurized productShows the inactivation step works
ContaminantsLimits and methods for lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenicRequired for most target markets
MicrobiologyTotal plate count, yeast, mould, Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria and othersBasic food-safety release criteria
COA per batchA batch-specific COA, with an example before you orderA generic spec sheet is not a batch test
Certificate holderCertificate copies naming the legal entity that actually makes the ingredient, plus scope wording and validity datesCertificates belong to a company, not to a distributor
Stability dataReal-time and accelerated results on the actual powder, with the lot and conditionsSupports the stated shelf life
Regulatory dossierSafety data, GRAS or novel food documents, and a clear statement of what each document is and is notSelf-affirmed GRAS is not FDA approval
Samples and traceabilitySample lot, lot-to-COA traceability, packaging descriptionLets you run your own lab verification

To compare these items with a real specification, see the specification table on our Akkermansia powder page.

Who should hold the certificates?

The company that makes the ingredient. A distributor can supply a certificate, but you need to know whose facility it covers, what its scope says and whether it is still valid. Read the scope line carefully, because it describes the processes and product categories the audit covered.

For AKM Lab-01, the strain, certificates, deposits, GRAS conclusion and patents belong to the strain and manufacturing partner, Moon (Guangzhou) Biotech Co., Ltd. Tianyi Health Tech supplies the ingredient and handles quotation, documentation and export. Our Quality & Certifications page states the holder of each document, and copies can be provided for your supplier file.

What are the common red flags?

How do we answer these questions for AKM Lab-01?

AKM Lab-01 is a pasteurized, freeze-dried powder with strain deposits DSM 35743, CGMCC 46611 and GDMCC 63782. Specified potency is stated as total cells in TFU/g, the culturable count is below 10 CFU/g, and Amuc_1100 content is above 60 ng/mg of total protein. The manufacturer holds FSSC 22000, a Halal certificate, a US food facility registration, a self-affirmed GRAS conclusion from an independent expert panel (not an FDA approval) and 8 granted patents (CN and HK).

A batch COA, a specification sheet and a sample lot can be requested. Limits are in the ingredient overview.

What is the regulatory dossier you should expect?

Expect documents, not assurances. In the EU, pasteurised A. muciniphila has a novel food authorisation under Regulation (EU) 2022/168, so ask the supplier whether the product meets its specifications. In the US, ask what safety documentation exists and what status it has. Whatever the answer, your brand remains responsible for compliance and labeling in your market.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important thing to ask an Akkermansia supplier?

Ask which strain it is and for the deposit accession number, then ask how potency is measured. Those two answers tell you whether you are buying a defined, traceable ingredient or a generic label.

Is CFU or TFU the right potency measure?

It depends on the form. CFU applies to living cells and TFU (total cells) to heat-inactivated powders. For pasteurized AKM Lab-01 the specification uses TFU/g and holds the culturable count below 10 CFU/g.

What is Amuc_1100 and why do suppliers quote it?

Amuc_1100 is a heat-stable outer-membrane protein of A. muciniphila and is used as a quality marker for AKM Lab-01 (specification above 60 ng/mg of total protein). Ask any supplier quoting it for the assay method and a batch value.

Does GRAS mean FDA approval?

No. A self-affirmed GRAS conclusion is a panel conclusion made by or for the manufacturer. It is not an FDA approval and, without a GRAS notice, there is no FDA response letter. Supplement use raises separate dietary ingredient questions, so confirm them with your advisor.

Can I get a COA and samples before I order?

Yes. A batch COA, a specification sheet and samples can be requested through the form below or by email.
